When to call: your provider's instructions always come first. Common guidance is to head in at the 5-1-1 pattern — contractions 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour. Call sooner if your water breaks, you notice bright bleeding, the baby's movements drop, or anything simply feels wrong.
Timing contractions, briefly
Time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next — that's the "apart" number that matters. Duration is start to end of a single contraction. Real labor contractions grow longer, stronger and closer together; Braxton Hicks tend to stay irregular and ease with rest and water.
Show your log to your provider or birth team — a clean table of times beats a story of guesses.
